5 tips for small business websites
Whether you trade online or on the high street, your website is one of the most vital elements of your marketing. If you don’t have one you’re losing out on business, it’s as simple as that. In fact, 80% of small business owners would only trade with another company if they had a website. There are some amazing small business websites out there, and some awful ones too – and it’s not necessarily the most expensive sites that make the biggest or most positive impact. Here are five tips to help you build a website that will present your business in the right way and help increase your sales.
Use a logo
Having a professionally designed logo shows you’ve invested money in your company and also that you’ve given some thought to how you want to be seen. Make sure you use your logo on your website as well as your business cards, flyers etc. It will help raise the profile of your business as people will recognise your “brand” quickly. You can also use the logo as the starting point for your web design, matching the colours on buttons and menus, for example.
Have clear navigation
The worst websites are those where it’s impossible to find key information, perhaps because the menu is hidden away in the footer area or disguised amongst a load of images. When people visit your website you need them to be able to find out about you and contact you quickly and easily. Most people look for navigation either across the top of the site or on the left hand side, so make sure you place clear navigation menus or buttons where people expect to find them.
On the web, where you have maybe a second to make an impression, imagery is vital. If your budget allows, ask a professional photographer to take bespoke photos of you and your business. If that’s not possible, use good quality stock images, but be careful as other sites may use them too – it has been known for popular images to be used in some rather dodgy places as well as on professional sites! If you’re using stock imagery consider checking your images with a tool like Tin Eye, which searches for those images on the internet so you can see where else they’re being used.
Call to Action
The most successful websites are those that tell people what to do next – strange but true! Make sure your visitors know what you want them to do on every page – email you for info, request a callback, download a report, place an order?
Have a blog
Blogging is one of the best ways to increase traffic to your website because it lets Google know your site is active and regularly updated, it increases the size of your site, it gives you content to discuss on social media that other people can share and it lets you target niche keywords and topics. We’ve written a lot about blogging on this site – if you’re not doing it yet, why not?!
